I will now spill the good stuff about my take on the camera dollars course 8-)

This is a meaty system that breaks down how you can make a living from photography into 15 sections:

1/ Introduction

Here the author, discusses why to go into the business of selling photographs, and what you can expect from the course. Including how to break into the world of online stock photography.

2/ Insider Secrets

Next in camera dollars he discusses 7 insider secrets that can save you a lot of time and hassle, and also includes a sample photo release form so that you don’t have any legal problems down the track.

3/ Creating A System

Photography is no different from any other business. It does take work and commitment. You might get lucky and photograph an event or a person that makes you fortunes with one photo. But, in reality, you are more likely to win the lottery. And it remains true that the more photos you take and have available for sale. The luckier (and richer) you are likely to get.  So he discusses the important subjects of:

- what you should be shooting
- what is legal to shoot
- important web resources to instantly check out
- what’s legal to publish and sell

4/ What Do People On Stock Photo’s Actually Buy?

One thing I really liked here in camera dollars were the little tips and asides that the author included about what the consistent best selling photographs are, and what you should be focusing on shooting for maximum commercial viability.

As well as 21 different example photographs  of the types of photo’s you could sell in each category.

Nice. Because it’s easier to see what works from a photograph then from merely having a description. A picture tells a thousand words as we all know… :-)

5/ Selling Your Work

This is a big section of the camera dollars course. The author goes into a lot of detail about lots of different methods that you can use to get started.

I liked this, because sometimes with courses of this type it can seem daunting, and having lots of different ideas of areas to pursue makes it much more likely that you will actually get started trying to sell your photographs.

He also mentions two killer resources that I haven’t seen elsewhere that you can immediately check out, and circumvents the headache of hunting down stock photo sites and deciding whether they are any good by having a nice review list of the 12 main stock photo sites, what commissions they pay and good and bad points about them.

He also has links to a further 11 sites that you can check out (if you aren’t excited enough from checking out the first 12.)

This is real time saver stuff.

For example he this to say about one of them:

“Earn 65% for every photo that Alama sells for you. Good money! I average about $2000 per month with these guys alone.”

Let’s talk more about how this can happen for you on the next page …

Great! So how do I do it? The course goes on…

6/ Step By Step ‘How To’ With One of The sites

Ok. So, having identified all those potential sites. He now gets down and dirty in the trenches with one of them. And shows you screenshots of exactly what to fill in, and what to do to get going quickly.

This is nice. It is very step by step, and leads you by the hand through the process. Like anything getting started is often the hardest part, and its good to see that covered well here. Including how to get photo’s approved, and some key marketing considerations such as which keywords to use and a really sneaky tactic he uses to make an extra $200 a month from virtually no extra work.

7/ Selling On Ebay

Here he delves into the ins and outs of ebay. From the legal stuff, to the practicalities of what to sell from screensavers to sports photography, weird and wacky pictures and a website that will pay you up to $50 for your funny pictures.

Ebay can seem confusing so I liked this section. I would have preferred a bit more hand holding here through the ebay process. I felt Brian skimmed it a bit in this part of camera dollars. But there were some nice ideas to get you started.

8/ Selling Offline

It is a sign of the times that this section was fairly short. Clearly this ebook is designed primarily for making money from photography online.  So if you need a guide that is aimed mainly at selling photographs to magazines or newspapers, then this is probably not the book for you.

9/ How Much Can You Make?

Ok. Jerry Maguire time :-)

‘SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!’

Here he gets very specific about how much you might expect to make from selling photos in different mediums such as postcard shots, web images, books, magazines etc.

You can potentially make some good money.

Clearly this can never be exact. But you would at least get some good starting info. And that information can be hard to find.

I like the section here in camera dollars where he discusses how you can potentially earn more from the same set of photo’s. This is smart thinking and worth a read.

10/ Working For Clients

Now, say you don’t rate your photos in the first league. Or just want to get started gently with the business.

What then?

Well, there is an entire section devoted to how you can work for many and varied industries such as real estate agencies, insurance firms etc that are always in need of having photographs taken for example to sell new house listings or photograph possessions for potential insurance policies.

He also suggests a further five industries that you could approach that are calling out for photographers on a daily basis, and are willing to pay for the privilege.

One of the first potential areas he suggests to get paid for your photographs was:

11/ Field Service Photography

This was really interesting. It explored how to go about making money through becoming a field service rep for large companies.

This was a really good section. Quite detailed. He lists the 7 steps you need to take to be able to do the job. As well as a list of over 50 companies names and comprehensive details that are all seeking Field Service Reps at different times.

12/ Creating Quality Professional Quality Photographs

Getting into the nitty gritty of how to produce a product (a photo) that other people want to buy. He discusses aspects such as how the type of camera affects the photo, and a really good section on lighting and what you need to do to get it just right.

Other topics included here include reviewing 8 different types of lens filters, and the role that special effects lenses can have on making the photo better.

As well as the ins and outs of framing the perfect shot, understanding the concept of depth of field in a practical way so as to be able to take better photos in the field. As well as big sections on camera settings and shutter speeds.

He goes on to discuss output methods such as printing and putting on disk.

This is a very strong area of the camera dollars manual. And its good to see that there is still a focus here on caring about creating quality photos. And not just on selling them.

13/ Photo Editing Software

This section is a little weak. Honestly, there are better books about photoshop and photo editing.

Thankfully the primary focus in this book is on making money from your camera, so its not a big omission.

But it would be nice if this had been a little beefier.

Still, what there is, is fine. If a little basic.

14/ Copyrights (And Why You Should Care…)

This section is very good.

It is an often overlooked fact that you need to have at least a basic understanding of copyright if you are going to make money from your photos, and not get sued.

This section of camera dollars could save you a lot of dollars and heartache in the future…

15/ Secrets To Succeed

Here he lists 10 really useful tips on how to succeed in making money as a photographer.

As well as a 10 page sections filled with resources and common terms to finish off.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I felt this was a very worthwhile book. And well worth buying.

It had an abundance of good ideas, and forms a really good platform to get started making money as a photographer.
